What kills me is the fact that corruption is so deep rooted in this country that it has out grown political parties. While we take pleasure in mud-slinging rival parties and reinforcing primordial loyalties, we fail to realise that these political parties are themselves victims of a “Perverted Democracy”, wherein freebies for vote, public defamation, use of unparliamentary language are the only practical means of achieving a political victory.
No politician ever took the vow to destroy this country. All they want is to win, at any cost. It is the same strategy sportsmen employ to bring home victory. Going by that ideology, this country has produced some of the best political sportsmen who know what it takes to win and don't spare any effort to deliver the same.
The apparent cause of this perversion????.......“dirty politics”, the favourite middle class rhetoric and there ends the topic. But reality is a bit more complex. It requires some critical examination and a balanced approach to go beyond the apparent and see the real problem.
Thus far, we have been replacing one party with another in successive elections who again are playing the same game to get in to power. There is no use changing players. It is the rules of the game that need fundamental change. Every corrupt politician must be punished,not only by bringing him/her to justice but also by wiping off their political future.
We have reduced politics to tea time entertainment. This must change. Politics should become everybody’s business......serious business.......as serious as one’s career and next only to one’s family. Every citizen should engage in politics and public work (not necessarily contest elections). The answer to bad politics is more politics, clean politics and politics beyond parties.
